ABOUT THE HONOREE

Ken Burns has been making documentary films for almost fifty years. Since the Academy Award nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, Ken has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made, including The Civil War; Baseball; Jazz; The War; The National Parks: America’s Best Idea; Prohibition; The Roosevelts: An Intimate History; The Vietnam War; Country Music; The U.S. and the Holocaust; and, most recently, The American Buffalo.

Ken’s films have been honored with dozens of major awards, including seventeen Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards and two Oscar nominations. In September of 2008, at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards, Ken was honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In November of 2022, Ken was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame.

TOGETHER, WE INSPIRE UPSTANDERS

Forty years ago, a group of Holocaust survivors came together with an extraordinary vision to create a center to teach about the devastating horrors of the Holocaust and to provide a place of remembrance for those murdered. They saw it as their responsibility to build a place for future generations to learn from the past to prevent future atrocities. Their founding vision continues today in the mission of the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum to teach the history of the Holocaust and advance human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference.

We take hope that just as hatred is learned, it can be unlearned. The Museum teaches students and visitors about some of humanity’s most incredible stories of struggle and courage in an age-appropriate way to empower them to be Upstanders against injustice. The Museum will reach more than 190,000 students during the 2024-2025 school year.
